What we tested and how

We ran eight VPNs — NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, Private Internet Access, CyberGhost, Mullvad, ProtonVPN, and IPVanish — through a structured test over six weeks between January and February 2026.

Every VPN was tested from the same three locations: the UK, Germany, and Australia. We connected to servers in the US, UK, Canada, Japan, and Australia, then tried to access and stream content on each platform listed below. We checked whether the service blocked VPN traffic, whether streams loaded in HD and 4K, and whether connections dropped mid-show. Each test was repeated at least three times per server per platform.

We also checked each provider's logging policies, looked at independent audits where they existed, and put the apps through their paces on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS.

Streaming performance

This is the one that matters for most of you. Here's exactly what NordVPN unblocked — and where it stumbled.

Netflix

Solid. We accessed the US, UK, Canadian, Japanese, and Australian Netflix libraries without issue. US Netflix is the real prize here — it still has the biggest catalogue — and NordVPN connected consistently across its SmartPlay-enabled servers. Streams loaded in 4K within about 8 seconds. No buffering during two-hour test sessions.

One caveat: a handful of US servers (specifically two in Atlanta we kept landing on) occasionally triggered Netflix's proxy error. Switching servers fixed it in under 30 seconds. Annoying, but not a dealbreaker.

BBC iPlayer

Perfect. If you're a British expat abroad, this alone might justify the subscription. Connects via UK servers every time, streams in HD without judder. Live sport on iPlayer also worked — we tested a Premier League match and it held up fine.

Disney+

Works across US, UK, Australian, and Canadian libraries. Hotstar (Disney+ in India) also unblocked, which some rivals completely fail at. 4K HDR streams loaded without issue.

Amazon Prime Video

Generally good, though Prime Video is increasingly aggressive about VPN detection. US and UK libraries worked reliably. We hit one block on a German server that resolved after reconnecting. Not the cleanest performance here, but NordVPN outperformed every rival we tested on Prime Video.

Sport: DAZN, ESPN+, Sky Sports, Kayo

DAZN (big for boxing and football depending where you are) worked on US and Canadian servers. ESPN+ unblocked cleanly in the US. Sky Sports via the Sky Go app was hit-or-miss — worked about 70% of the time, which isn't great. Kayo Sports in Australia worked without problems.

All three are US-only services and all three unblocked cleanly. Max in particular — which carries HBO content — worked in 4K HDR every single time we tested it.

What it couldn't unblock

Honesty matters here. NordVPN struggled with a couple of platforms:

• Crunchyroll (anime streaming): blocked on most servers we tried. ProtonVPN actually did better here.
